This talk will focus on our approaches to dynamically downscale global model simulations of past and future climate. Based on our interest in locally severe thunderstorms, we have developed a downscaling procedure that involves a multi-decadal sequence of daily integrations of the Weather Research and Forecasting model, performed at relatively high resolution (gridpoint spacings of a few kilometers). Advanced statistical methods are used to identify and classify the severe convective weather in the model output. The various technical challenges that we have encountered will be described.
