Transportation To and Around the ConferenceBy planeThe Dane County Regional Airport (Madison Airport) is located on the far north east corner of Madison. Taxis can take you to Madison's city center and cost approximately $12 one way. Major airlines serving Madison include Midwest Express, United Airlines, American Airlines, TransWorld, Midway and Northwest/KLM. You may also fly into Milwaukee's General Mitchell Field or Chicago's O'Hare and continue to Madison by bus. Plane fares to Milwaukee and Chicago tend to be cheaper than to Madison. Bus transportation The Alco Van Galder bus line runs about eight times daily between Chicago's O'Hare Airport and downtown Madison (stopping at the University of Wisconsin Memorial Union, close to all conference hotels). The one-way fare is currently $17 and travel time is about three hours and fifteen minutes. Call 608 257 5593 for fare and schedule information. Greyhound bus lines run to Madison. The terminal is several blocks from the Memorial Union. Call 800 231 2222 for fare and schedule information. By car Madison lies about 150 miles northwest of Chicago, 75 miles west of Milwaukee, and 270 miles southeast of Minneapolis and is easily accessible via Interstate 90 and 94. However, parking in the center of Madison and on the University campus is limited. We recommend that you check with your hotel to ensure that parking is available. By bike Madison is very much a city of bicycles, and many residents commute around the city by bike. It's also a great way to explore the city and campus. Bikes can be rented through Yellow Jersey, 419 State Street, 257 4737; Budget Bicycle, 1230 Regent Street, 251 8413; Williamson Bicycle Works, 601 Williamson Street, 255 5292; and Trek, 652 W. Washington Avenue, 259 8735. Also, look for free "red bikes" downtown; these are yours to borrow in the State Street area to provide basic transport in the city center. Mass transit in Madison Madison Metro bus service provides citywide service (but to and from the Airport, alas!). A Metro ticket and information stand is located in the Memorial Union, or call (608) 266 4466 (6:15 am to 6 pm weekdays: 7:30 am to 6 pm Saturdays). | |||
